I’ll be performing songs from my solo debut — America the Broken — out via Robust Records.
This will be an intimate show at @hellomettlesome theatre, followed by a @jennyeggleston.art opening at @durhamartguild (both spaces are in the same building).
@jennyeggleston.art is an amazing visual artist, and she happens to be my my mom ! We organically started working on politically oriented art around the same time, and so it only felt right to do a joint show together.
I started writing what turned into this album in 2012 with a visceral reaction to the Trayvon Martin shooting. More songs came in 2018 while substitute teaching at Maplewood high in Nashville, and then again in 2020 with the onset of the pandemic and political unrest that ensued. Three years later, the themes of this record are present as ever on a global stage.
Oscillating between birds-eye and immediate, this collection of songs is my reaction to and reflection on it all.
