FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Theater FAQs

What is Mettlesome?
Mettlesome is a Durham-based performance and production collective. Since 2016, we have produced creator-driven shows and projects across the Triangle. The Mettlesome Theater is a home for Mettlesome Projects and creative work produced by other incredible artists in our community.

Where is the Mettlesome Theater located?
In Fall 2022, we opened a brand-new theater on the Golden Belt Arts campus at 800 Taylor Street Suite 9-156, Durham, NC 27701. Our front door is between Urban Tails and Hi-Wire Brewing.

How do I buy tickets to a show at the Mettlesome Theater?
For now, most tickets can only be purchased at the door (cash or card) before the show, pending availability. Advance tickets may be available for special performances.

What events happen at the Mettlesome Theater?
Our online calendar shows what is happening in the space when, whether that be a Mettlesome-produced improv performance or a special showcase event such as a scripted theatrical production produced by other local artists or organizations. We also hold classes, workshops, and rehearsals in our Theater space.

Does Mettlesome teach classes?
Yes! We offer introductory and advanced improv and sketch comedy classes, private workshops, and more. Check out Mettlesome Lab. We are always updating and expanding what we offer. If you have class-specific questions, check out our Lab FAQ & Policies.

How do I book the Mettlesome Theater for my own event or production?
Send us an email and we will be in touch about booking rates, policies, and availability.

Can Mettlesome perform at my birthday? Or lead a workshop for my office?
Sure! We have a portal for that. Mettlesome has experience tailoring individual shows and leading individualized workshops for corporate clients. Contact us and we can talk about details. Mettlesome can host private events at the Theater or on-site at your office, home, or other venue.

Who runs Mettlesome?
Mettlesome leadership is comprised of Partners and Stakeholders. Partners handle big picture items such as financial and organizational vision. Stakeholders vote on management decisions and artistic priorities. You can learn more about our Partners and Stakeholders here.

We are also deeply indebted to the Backroom Shakespeare Project for directly and generously inspiring the structure of the Mettlesome Constitution.

What if a negative incident occurs at Mettlesome theater or during a show, event, or class?
All Mettlesome Partners, Stakeholders, teachers, staff, performers, and students are required to sign and understand our Code of Conduct and Student Bill of Rights. Activities which go against our Code of Conduct or conflict with anyone’s sense of personal safety or comfort may be handled in a number of ways:

  • During a performance, you may speak directly to the House Manager.

  • During a class, you may speak directly to the Teacher.

  • During a rehearsal or practice, you may speak directly to Coach.

  • As part of a Mettlesome show, you may speak with your director and/or any stakeholder.

  • You may also email the Stakeholders at hello(at)thisismettlesome.com.

  • You may submit an anonymous report here.

We are hopeful that the Mettlesome Theater and our creative community are able to promote the values of what makes a brave space where performers, students, teachers, leaders, and audience members can actively participate in a fun, supportive, and creative environment.
