In this 7 week course, you'll learn how to perform a fully improvised musical comedy, making up scenes and songs on the spot with live accompaniment. You'll learn the building blocks of an improvised song, and how to use them to create songs that sound like they were written. You’ll learn to sing with others on stage to produce banging group numbers, solos, and duets. We'll cover melody, lyrics, rhyming, when to start (and stop!) singing, and together explore the unique opportunities for comedy presented by musical improv.

PREREQUISITE: Improv 201 or instructor approval.
Singing experience is helpful but not at all required (if you can sing happy birthday without making people wince, you’ll be fine, we promise).

INSTRUCTOR: Matthew Schmitz is a musical improviser and instructor who co-captains Mettlesome’s musical house team Broken Records and performs with Singamajig, the improvised musical for kids. He performed at Endgames Improv in San Francisco before joining Mettlesome in 2024, and has trained musical at Leela SF and the Magnet Theater in NYC.
MUSIC DIRECTOR: Gabby Marie is a Nashville-born, Chapel Hill-based vocalist, pianist, director, and educator with an M.M. in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from East Carolina University. She teaches at Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts and regularly performs with the non-profit DooR to DooR. With versatile experience across genres, she is passionate about serving her community through music.
